New Delhi: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday rejected a plea for continuation of the CBI enquiry into the police action in Nandigram that claimed 14 lives.
The High Court said that any decision on resumption of central probe would be taken only after examining all evidence.
A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice S S Nijjar and Justice P C Ghose while disallowing petitioner Kalyan Banerjee's plea observed that it would decide on the need for it only after studying all the affidavits filed by the state government and other petitioners.
The court also said that it needed time to go through all the claims and counter-claims before deciding on the issue.
The court adjourned the case for three weeks after which it would come up for hearing again. The Bench also directed CBI to preserve all evidence, most of which are documentary in nature, in sealed covers till further directions.
The CBI had submitted an inquiry report before the court on March 22 on its directions.
The Chief Justice, taking note of West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi's statement after the Nandigram incident, had suo motu directed the CBI to conduct an enquiry.
