New Delhi: India will try to interrogate 26/11 Mumbai terror attack accused David Coleman Headley after studying his plea bargain.
Union Home Secretary GK Pillai said in New Delhi on Friday that the Government is satisfied with the progress in Headley's case in a US court in Chicago.
"The good thing is that he will get life imprisonment. I don't think that the Government of India will be dissatisfied with that," said Pillai.
"As far as interrogation is concerned, we will have to work out the details and accordingly see. It looks like the Indian security agencies will be able to question him, we have to work out the details," he said.
However, Headley will not be extradited to India.
Under the plea bargain struck with the US government there are three ways in which India can get access to Headley.
Headley can testify through video conferencing or through submitting answers to India's list of queries. India can also make arrangements to interview him in the US.
But the Bharatiya Janata Party criticised the Government for what it called its "failure" to get Headley extradited.
Headley will not be extradited. It is a complete failure of Indian diplomacy. BJP will accept nothing less than Headley's extradition for trial in an Indian court. It seems Headley is heading for a virtual amnesty in the American court," said BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy.
The US Department of Justice released a statement on Thursday saying that India can directly question the Pakistani-American terrorist after he admitted before the US Distrct Court Judge Harry Leinenweber in Chicago that he was involved in scouting the targets for the Mumbai terror attacks.
Headley accused of plotting the 26/11 Mumbai attacks at the behest of terror group Lashkar-e-Toiba and conspiring to target a Danish newspaper, on Thursday pleaded guilty to all terror charges before the US District Court in Chicago.
