HYDERABAD: As different countries try to iron out differences on climate change at Durban this month-end, here is a chance for the residents of the city to do their bit for the cause. A workshop on energy and carbon audit is being organized jointly by the Indian Youth Climate Network (IYCN), Energy Conservation Mission (ECM) and the Consulate General of the United States, Hyderabad to train people from different walks of life in computing and cutting down on their carbon footprint.“The increase in use of coal and other non-renewable sources of energy has led to an increase in the carbon footprint of industries manifold. Usually, tier-2 companies ignore the aspect of reducing their consumption,” says regional director of IYCN, Hyderabad, NS Prasad. Carbon auditing not only takes into account energy efficiency of infrastructure and premises, but also water usage and waste disposal and management.Since many of the tier-2 companies are unaware of the benefits of carbon audit in utilisation of natural resources, the workshop will educate the participants in this aspect. Further, as part of the workshop, students will carry out energy and carbon audit for some institutions like hotels, hospitals, colleges etc and prepare a report with observations, calculations and suggestions to improve on their carbon footprint, says NS Prasad. The exercise will be carried out based on a revised module developed by IYCN and ECM over a period of four years. “The module cost us `45,000 to develop. What the participants will learn at the workshop is basic level of auditing. This will be of special interest to engineers, architects, accountants as well as those working in corporates or who wish to step into the field,” explains the IYCN regional director. The workshop is open to anyone between 18 to 35 years of age. Applications will be screened and 25 select individuals will undergo the training on November 19 and 20, following which groups of trainees will be taken for auditing exercise to different institutions. Their reports and recommendations will be evaluated by IYCN. A refundable amount of `1000 will be charged which will be returned on submission of the report. The last date for sending applications is Nov 15. Further details are available on www.hyderabad.iycn.in and www.hyderabad.iycn.in.
