New Delhi: Of late, the Indian Air Force has been showing its airtime might in the Bangalore air show and the President’s Fleet Review.
And now, in its platinum jubilee year, the IAF will also show off its prowess in the performing arts.
In a news that comes as music for many ears, the IAF’s Air Warrior Symphony Orchestra (ASWO) will teach military tunes and Hindustani compositions to Afghanistan's armed forces.
PTI reports the Orchestra will train 10 Afghan officers for six months in the ASWO at Jalahalli in Bangalore.
The IAF Orchestra will also teach them the art of reading notations, playing instruments and selecting the right kind of instruments.
"The Afghanistan government had requested its Indian counterpart to train some of its armed forces officers," ASWO Director Pramod Kumar Jena was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.
Jena added that IAF will also help the Afghans buy some instruments from India or maybe even donate them to the Afghan army.
The Orchestra held its last training 10 years ago when it trained a Sri Lankan military band.
"At the ASWO, we play every type of music, be it classical or jazz, and have various percussion and other instruments," Jena told the agency.
A 75-member team of ASWO will visit Afghanistan in June as part of a friendly exchange programme and the ASWO will perform at various places.
"Indian music is loved by people in neighbouring countries, including Afghanistan. It will not be a surprise if they express a desire to pick some popular Indian tunes. We will not mind teaching them those as well," Jena was quoted as saying.
