KOCHI: In a major step towards facilitating transshipment through India’s first ever international container transshipment terminal (ICTT) at Vallarpadam, the Union Ministry of Finance has brought in a new system for issuing clearance to containers transported though Vallarpadam. The Additional Director, Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, has conveyed the decisions regarding the new system to the Chief Commissioner, Customs, Kochi.According to the new system, clearance for containers transported by sea between two foreign nations or from an Indian port to a foreign port or vice-versa, should be issued by the SEZ, customs. However, the clearance for the containers transported between an Indian port and a foreign port by road/rail to sea or by sea to road/rail should be given by the Department of Revenue, Customs. The decisions were taken based on the discussions among top officials of Ministries of Shipping, Commerce and Finance and the visits to Kochi in this regard. The new system wil be put in place with immediate effect. The decisions have been communicated to cargo vessels touching Indian ports, the officials said.
