Nauka Doobi is based on a short story by Rabindranath Tagore, which depicts the tussle between true love and social conventions related to marriage. Law student Ramesh is in love with his friend's sister Hemnalini, and is about to propose to her. But his father summons him saying that he has fixed another match for him. Ramesh is forced to marry Sushila, whom he has not even seen. Soon after, the boat that the newly married couple and Ramesh's father are travelling in capsizes and a series of events unfolds...
The film raises issues about the conventional ideas of marriage and love.
