New Delhi: The IITs are likely to withhold the 9 per cent OBC quota in the Joint Entrance Examination or JEE this year in view of the Supreme Court order.

While the court order putting a stay on the 27 per cent reservation for OBCs has put elite institutions like IIMs and IITs in a fix, the JEE board reacted swiftly, saying it will review the issue in view of the court order.

The IITs had earlier announced a 9 per cent quota for OBCs in JEE as they sought to implement Centre's quota order in a phased manner, beginning with 9 per cent reservation this year. The JEE is scheduled for April 8.

PTI quoted a top official of IIT-Mumbai as saying that the institute will abide by the ruling and follow the directives accordingly. "Since the apex court has stayed the implementation of the OBC quota in elite educational institutes, we have to abide by it," the official said.

The JEE board, which has members from all IITs, is already weighing the various options after the court ruling.

The anti-reservation student group in the IIT campus in Powai has, meanwhile, welcomed the Supreme Court's order while the pro-quota group said it was hopeful the Centre would do its homework in favour of the reservations for OBCs.

In its interim order staying the Central Educational Institution (Reservation in Admission) Act of 2006, the apex court said the 1931 census could not be a determining factor for identifying OBCs for providing a quota to them.

However, it clarified that the benefit of reservations for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes could not be withheld and the Centre could go ahead with the process to determine backward classes.
