Is it possible to earn a fortune rivalling that of IT techies by just working as a roadside vendor? Most would think not but Narasamma from Andhra Pradesh’s Kutagulla would say otherwise. Narasamma has been making dosas for a decade now. Her dosas have gained great fame in Kutagulla, just three kilometres from Kadiri. Operating from a small hut next to the main road in Anantapuram Kadiri, she earns around Rs 10,000 daily, translating to about Rs 3 lakh per month—equivalent to a software engineer’s salary.

The work is managed entirely by family members. Talking to Local18, Narasamma said that almost every member of the household helps in the small but thriving business. Earning ten thousand rupees a day from dosa preparation is a remarkable achievement. They offer egg dosas at twenty-five rupees, regular dosas at ten rupees, and spicy dosas at a combined price of twenty rupees. Sales occur daily from 7 AM until noon. Local labourers, small business owners, students, government employees, and travellers frequently visit to enjoy Narasamma’s dosas.

The egg dosa, in particular, is highly popular among local food enthusiasts. Visitors typically eat three or four dosas at a time, which highlights their great taste. Dosas are a tasty, nutritious, and easy-to-prepare Indian dish. Narasamma prepares the batter by soaking rice and urad dal, grinding them, and letting it ferment overnight. The next day, she adds water to the batter at her tiffin centre and cooks the dosas.

Generally, dosas are served with chutney, sambar, and dal. They currently use red chutney, dal chutney, ginger chutney, and Bombay chutney. Narasamma adheres to this tradition. Despite her simple setup, her distinctive flavour is unforgettable. She noted that their expenses are covered by the ten thousand rupees they make, and expressed satisfaction in providing tasty and hygienic dosas for snack lovers.
