Mumbai/New Delhi: A 53-year-old woman, who had diabetes and hypertension, died after being diagnosed with swine flu in Mumbai on Saturday.

Famida Panwala is the second person in the country to die of the H1N1 influenza. Rida Sheikh, 14, succumbed to the disease in Pune on Monday.

Additional Chief Secretary Health Sharvari Gokhale told IANS that Panwala was treated at the Lilavati Hospital for four days for "pneumonia and hypertension".

"Today (Saturday) she was admitted to Kasturba Hospital and her blood test was taken. It tested positive for swine flu and she passed away this evening," she said.

IANS reports Panwala, a resident of Jogeshwari in northwest Mumbai, was on Tuesday admitted to a hospital near her residence for diabetes and hypertension.

She was admitted in the Lilavati Hospital for a few hours on Friday. Her condition worsened and she was rushed to the Kasturba Hospital in the evening. Her sample was taken Saturday morning and she was diagnosed with influenza A (H1N1) in the afternoon.

"She tested positive for swine flu and passed away this (Saturday) evening," Gokhale told IANS.

According to official figures, over 720 people in India have tested positive for swine flu so far, though over 500 of them have been discharged after being treated.

Maharashtra has reported over 260 cases and 160 are from Pune. A doctor and a pharmacist, both influenza A (H1N1) patients, continued to be critical for the second day on Saturday.

In Mumbai, 28-year-old businessman Sandeep Gaikwad, who was admitted to the Hiranandani Hospital after developing swine flue symptoms last week, turned critical on Friday and was put on a ventilator.

The global swine flu pandemic has so far claimed the lives of almost 1,200 people since the outbreak was identified in April.

Earlier this week, the World Health Organization warned that the spread of the virus is unstoppable.
