BERHAMPUR: The Permanent Lok Adalat (PLA) for public utility service, Ganjam, has ordered ICICI Lombard General Insurance, Mumbai, to pay compensation to the bereaved family of an accident victim. According to PLA records, in June 2011 one P. Gundu Patra was crushed to death by a motorcycle near Chudangapur under Digaphandi police. He was the only breadwinner of the family of four. His parents filed a case before PLA for a compensation of ` 7 lakh. After verification of all relevant records and examining the witnesses, PLA Chairman RK Banerjee and members JK Pattnaik, Basudev Patra ordered the insurance company to pay `4.33 lakh towards compensation with an interest of 6 per cent per annum with effect from October 22, 2011, within three months. The order stated that out of the total compensation amount, ` 1 lakh shall be in a fixed deposit of a nationalised bank in the name of Patra’s minor son, till he attains majority. Of the rest ` 66,500 would be deposited in the name of Patra’s parents and wife for five years and the rest amount will be divided between the parents and wife of the deceased.
