Interim budget a fine balancing act: Manmohan Singh
It continues to be a 'people's budget, feels PM, who is convalescing after surgery.

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Monday hailed the interim budget as a 'fine balancing act', and said it will stimulate growth for the country in these difficult times.

"I have no doubt that the continued stimulus for the various flagship programmes of the government will provide relief to all sections - specially the aam aadm (common man)," the prime minister said in a statement.

"Since the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) government took over, aam aadmi has been the centre of our planning process. This focus continues and the interim budget clearly indicates the next steps. It continues to be a 'people's budget'," he added.

Manmohan Singh, who holds the finance portfolio, had left the tabling of the interim budget to Minister for External Affairs Pranab Mukherjee. The prime minister is convalescing after a heart bypass surgery he underwent last month.

Complimenting Mukherjee for his "effective response to a difficult economic situation", he said: "The interim budget is a fine balancing act between the need to restore the economy to its optimum growth path and the constitutional constraints of a pre-election budget."

The prime minister said the benefits of the stimulus package for industry and the export sector announced earlier continued to be available. "Our stress on increasing the investment on infrastructure and employment generation has been clearly underlined. All this will result in a positive turnaround in economic activity and levels of confidence."
