Is rebuilding Andamans a lost cause?
Community representatives from the region say there has not been adequate rehabilitation as nothing has been rebuilt.

New Delhi: It might have been almost two years since the Tsunami hit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, but community representatives from the region still say that there has not been adequate rehabilitation as reportedly not even a single house destroyed has been rebuilt.

Over 9,700 families still live in shelters on the Islands, said the community head of Campbell Bay and also Zilla Parishad Chairperson of Little Andaman Jayaprabha.

Participating here in the launch of a report -- Assessing Post-Tsunami Housing Reconstruction in Andaman and Nicobar Islands: A People's Perspective, put together by four NGOs working on the topic, Jayaprabha said that the Government plans are still at the initial phase of preparation of prototypes of houses.

Pramukh of Little Andaman, Mylapalli Jogarao and Pradhan of Netaji Nagar Gram Panchayat, Ashim Mirbahar said they felt that the rehabilitation could actually result in relocation of the communities from their original habitats.

The Government reconstruction plans also failed to recognise the diverse ways of life of the Nicobarese, said head of the Society for Andaman and Nicobar Ecology, Samir Acharya.

But the silver lining in the cloud of doubt for the natives was not completely lost. Head of Action Aid Tsunami response team, Harjeet Singh, said it was not too late to sort out the housing problems.

What's your reaction?
