A day after CNN-IBN revealed David Headley's interrogation details that exposed the role of Hafiz Saeed and the ISI in 26/11 attacks, Islamabad remains in denial. It has thrashed the revelations on the eve of the foreign ministers meet that takes place in Islamabad on Thursday. CNN-IBN spoke to Pakistan High Commissioner to UK, Wajid S Hassan on the issue. Here is an excerpt of that interview.
CNN-IBN: Headley has testified to ISI involvement. So, is the Pakistani state involved?
Wajid S Hassan: Pakistan is never involved. ISI is never invoved because the ISI has been accused of various things in the past. I cannot be answerable to what happened in the past. But ever since this democratic government has taken over, ISI is totally under the control of army chief and the government of Pakistan. It insures that there is no such thing that would malign the ISI. The ISI is a very effective agency and it is meant for the internal security of the country.
CNN-IBN: One strong obstacle to trust is that India believes Pakistan has not done enough on 26/11.
Wajid Shamsul Hassan: Pakistan has done enough; Pakistan has put on trial 5 people and Pakistan has been pursuing the case very seriously and has been taking care of that no such incident takes place as far as possible. But we cannot guarantee the actions of non-state players. They are everywhere. Even in your own country, you know that there are so many states which are in the state of insurgency. Maoists are on the move; they control quite a bit of India. So, all these things can happen. But, as far as Pakistan is concerned, Pakistan is categorical and clear that it does not have to do anything with trouble in India because a trouble in India means trouble in Pakistan as well so we will not support any sort of terrorist activity in India.
