Army faces challenge of discouraging "misguided youths" in trouble-torn Kashmir and Northeast from taking the route of violence.

New Delhi: Army faces the challenge of discouraging "misguided youths" in trouble-torn Kashmir and the Northeast from taking the route of violence, Army Chief General J J Singh said on Saturday.

"Whatever we are doing in Kashmir and the North East is a challenge. The Army will be following the strategy of 'iron fist in a velvet glove' to dissuade misguided youth in these regions," Singh was quoted by PTI.

He said India had a well-trained and professional Army. However, it faces major challenge when it comes being equipped with modern and hi-tech facilities.

"We do not want to be counted as the second largest Army in numbers. We are planning to modernise the Army to meet future challenges," Singh said.

Fanaticism, corruption and unequal distribution of resources were behind most troubles in the country and divisive elements were taking advantage of the situation, he said.

Singh said the Indian Army took pride in being a secular organisation. "We are apolitical, professional and secular. When we go into battle, we do not look where our buddies come from. Soldiers are comrades-in-arms and fight together for the honour, glory and safety of the country," he said.
