Lucknow: An associate of arrested Naxal leader Kobad Ghandy and a PhD holder from the JNU were among eight Maoists taken into custody by the Uttar Pradesh police from Kanpur on Tuesday.
"Eight members of banned CPI (Maoists) were arrested from different places in Kanpur city during raids by UP STF this morning," Director General of Police Karamveer Singh told reporters in Lucknow.
Two of them were top leaders of the banned group. Balraj alias Arvind is member of CPI (Maoist) central committee and polit bureau and its secretary, northern regional committee.
He was an associate of top maoist leader Kobad Ghandy, who was arrested from New Delhi in last September.
"Ghandy had mentioned Balraj's name during interrogation," Singh said.
Another red rebel identified as Chintan alias Banshidhar Singh, has a PhD and M Phil from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. He was a former member of the
organisation's polit bureau and has been tipped to be future head of Uttar Bihar, UP and Uttrakhand sub-area committee.
"He was in jail for several years and was out on bail," he said.
Other naxalites were identified as Naveen Prasad Singh, Ambrish, Deepak Ram, all natives of Bihar, Shivraj Singh, Rajendra Kumar Phulara, hailing from Uttrakhand and
Kripashanker of Kushinagar district of the state, he said.
DGP said Balraj, who was active in Lalgarh, Purulia and Bankura area of Bihar, was accused of executing attack on Lakhi Sarai collectorate, killing of local CPM leaders and
special armed police jawans.
