After a palatable discussion for eight hours with the principal secretary of Health and Family Welfare, junior doctors withdrew their strike and resumed duties from 9 am on Thursday.
The junior doctors had boycotted emergency ward services from Monday and held a sit-in protest for demanding clarity in the guidelines for compulsory rural service.
“We were assured by the principal secretary K. Rathna Kishore that a committee will be chaired by him to decide on the emoluments and terms of service. For the current batch of PG Diploma graduates who have lost precious time due to the pending decisions, an exemption of three months of rural service will be granted to them.
Also, some new vacancies will be introduced in the present list of rural postings,” said president of Junior Doctors Association (JUDA) Dr.I.Abhilash. The protesting junior doctors had alleged bias in the allotment of the rural postings for the present batch and the new vacancies were introduced to counter the charges.
The junior doctors were assured of the necessary infrastructure in a period of two months at rural posts where no accommodation was available.
“The committee members will be decided by the end of this week and will include director of medical education and representatives from the junior doctors,” said the JUDA representative.
