Calling for raising the level of ideological and organisational consciousness of party cadres, CPM general secretary Prakash Karat stressed the need to ensure that no lapse was committed while applying the principle of democratic centralism.
Inaugurating the one-day seminar organised as part of the P Sundaraiah birth centenary at the AKG Hall here on Wednesday, he said that in a Communist party there was enough space for holding discussions on any issue at any level based on democratic centralism. It is made possible through honouring and applying inner party democracy. At the same time, the decisions of higher level committees have to be obeyed and implemented as these committees are also elected bodies.
Criticism and self-criticism are the life blood of inner party democracy, he said.
“We should ensure that basic criteria of democratic centralism is not violated and no lapses committed while applying democratic centralism,’’ he said.
Karat said that the organisational structure of bourgeois parties never promote inner party discussions or criticism of party policies. But they call the CPM as dictatorial and Stalinist, he said.
He wanted the party cadres to consider Sundaraiah as the right model in dealing with the people’s issues.
Presiding over the seminar, CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan said P Sundraiah had been able to merge both parliamentary and extra-parliamentary agitational measures and, in the Kerala’s context, such a style has great relevance.
Presenting a paper on ‘Sundaraiah and agrarian movement’ in the seminar Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan said that the government had put even the paddy fields for sale under the cover of Emerging Kerala.
He recollected his close association with Sundaraiah ‘’who fought valiantly for the liberation of the farmers and the working class.’’
