New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday delivered the inaugural address at the HT Leadership Summit which is being partnered by CNN-News18. PM Modi talked about the various reforms undertaken by his government and their impact in ushering in development.

Key Takeaways:

While the government continues to face opposition fire over demonetisation and the Goods and Services Tax (GST), Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he is ready to pay the political price for these moves. “After demonetisation, a behavioural change has come to India. You can feel it for yourself. For the first time after Independence, the corrupt are feeling the heat,” he said. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has often targeted the Modi dispensation over GST, calling it a “Gabbar Singh Tax” that is hurting the common man.

PM Modi continued on his government’s agenda to fight against black money and said that a drive against benami properties using Aadhaar as a tool will start soon. He said the country is moving towards a system through which black money is constantly reducing and integrating into our formal economy.

Aadhaar was a focus area of the PM’s speech. He said Aadhaar has brought in irreversible changes in the system and was helping the government deliver subsidies to the poor and securing their rights. “We have created a leak-proof system through that was difficult to even dream of, a few years ago.”

The Prime Minister recalled the ongoing schemes and future plans for the country's farmers. The 100% urea coating of neem, digital platforms allowing farmers to sell their produce anywhere and the better storage facilities to help preserve farm produce till its sale, were some of the existing schemes. A Rs 6000 project to create modern food parks and food processing units was also in pipeline.

Modi said that most of the big shakeups in the system had been brought as a result of government's focus on bringing about changes at grassroots-levels. He added that his government would not hesitate to bring about more such changes in the system through its focus on grassroots and last-mile connectivity.

An example of changes made at grassroots-level was the Swachh Bharat Mission, the PM said. The government had not just created toilets in the country, through this scheme, but relieved the pain of millions of daughters of the country who after dusk used to be under tremendous stress.

Similarly the Ujjwala Yojana, the scheme through which government provided free LPG connections, forever brought about a transformation for women. “They did not just get a free gas connection, but also got a better health and more time for their families,” he said.

PM Modi said that Jan Dhan Yojana brought about far-reaching changes in poor people's lives. "The poor person who was earlier shooed away from banks now has his own bank account," Modi said.

Talking about successes received in international diplomacy, Modi recounted the victory India achieved in placing its nominee, Dalveer Bhandari at the International Court of Justice. Also, the fact that slogans like 'Ab ki Bar Cameron Sarkar' or 'Ab ki baar Trump Sarkar' used in British and American election, Modi said, showed how 'Indian' global politics had become.
