BANGALORE: Former Indian cricket captain Anil Kumble had some wise advice for high school students on Saturday. Drawing inferences from his experience as a successful cricketer, Kumble urged students to simplify problems and practice relentlessly for better performance.Speaking at the conclusion of the Science Aptitude Test (SAT) programme conducted by Edurite Learning Centre, the 41-year old former cricketer said, “We’ve been brought up to ensure our results are good. If your mind is trained to simplify things, then you can find solutions easily.” Stressing on the importance of practice, Kumble compared a cricket match with an examination.“If you cannot deliver in a cricket match, there is no point in practising. You will do well if you know how well you have practised. The same thing applies to an exam, where you can push aside the tension and all the pressures when you have prepared well,” said Kumble.“As a bowler, I have to make an impression on the batsmen. With every ball, I ask the batsman a different question,” he said as he applied the same to attempting a question paper. “Always make an impression on the examiner by first answering the questions you are confident about,” said Kumble.Reminiscing his historic 10-wicket feat against Pakistan at Delhi in February 1999, he said, “Never become overconfident after you have performed well in one subject. For instance, after the Delhi test where I took all 10 wickets, I struggled to fetch a single wicket in the next Kolkata test match.”Kumble also gave away awards to students who scored high marks in the mock SAT programme. The winners from Karnataka were D Tony Fredrick, Shubham Subhas Danannavar, Richa R Naik and Dheeraj Prasanna.
