THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The haemophilia patients in the state are being put to immense suffering following the lack of Anti-Haemophilia Factor (AHF), a life-saving drug. Addressing media persons here on Friday, office-bearers of the Haemophilia Federation said that several patients in the state had lost their limbs following the non-availability of the drug. Though AHF is rarely available in the Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode Medical College Hospitals (MCHs), it is not available anywhere else in the state. AHF is necessary for acute haemophilia patients at least twice a week. Some haemophilia patients who opted for blood particles rather than AHF for economic reasons are found to be affected by bloodborne diseases. The Federation office-bearers said that they had submitted a charter of demands to Health Minister Adoor Prakash in this regard. The main demand is to provide medical facilities free of cost to haemophilia and blood disorder patients at the Government Medical College Hospitals and District Hospitals. The other demands are: To set up laboratories to find blood disorder diseases at government MCHs, to ensure the availability of AHF in these hospitals, to offer continuing medical education programmes for government service doctors in haemophilia treatment, to include haemophilia and blood disorder patients in the reservation category for the handicapped and to provide Carrier Detection and Pre-natal diagnosis tests at government MCHs.
