The sporting scene in the district is expected to get a shot in the arm with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) allocating Rs 5.28 crore towards the renovation and upgradation of facilities at the Lakshmibai National College for Physical Education (LNCPE), Kariavattom, under it.
The amount will be spent on renovating the cycling velodrome which was constructed in 1987. According to SAI officials, the existing velodrome was constructed on an earthen embankment and needs to be renovated. The project also includes construction of a warm-up track for cyclists, new pavilion, media room, gallery, dope test facilities and change room.
Dr G Kishore, SAI regional director, said that the current project was declared as part of the SAI programme which has been tailored to give a boost to sports in the state. “Upgradation of the velodrome will be beneficial as the state will be hosting the National Games soon. Besides, this will also help the cyclists in the state. Once the expansion programme materialises, the LNCPE will become a Centre of Excellence in the field of sports and physical education,” he said.
The renovation project also comprises construction of a check dam, wooden flooring of the multi-purpose hall and renovation of the indoor hall. The works will be undertaken by the Central Public Works Department and are expected to be completed before the National Games.
