Lok Sabha asks Sharmila to end fast
P A Sangma and several others in the Lok Sabha have appealed Irom Chanu Sharmila to end her hunger strike.

New Delhi: A strong plea for repealing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act was made by NCP member P A Sangma and several others in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday which appealed to Irom Chanu Sharmila from Manipur to end her hunger strike.

Raising the issue, P A Sangma (NCP) said that the condition of Sharmila, who has been on a hunger strike for last six years demanding that the Act be rescinded, is critical as she has "removed her life support" in the wake of the Prime Minister's statement, during his visit to Manipur, that the Act would be amended and not repealed.

Sharmila is admitted at AIIMS here and is being force-fed. Sangma dubbed the Act as "symbol of domination and repression" and demanded its immediate repeal saying it had failed to curb insurgency and several new groups had mushroomed.

Many members from the Left parties supported Sangma. Speaker Somnath Chatterjee observed that he was sure that the entire House was with him in his appeal to Sharmila to end her fast.
