Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has filed a response with the Bombay High Court over the issue of overweight school bags. The government has informed the court that a resolution has been issued which lists out measures that must be taken by parents, teachers, schools and education authorities to lighten the burden on students.
The government has said that school bags should not weigh more than 10 per cent of a student's weight. The government has said that schools should provide lockers and have e-learning facilities. The next hearing of the case will be held in two weeks.
The Department of Health has recommended that it is essential that schools should explain to students that over-weight school bags may bring about additional stress and fatigue. It had also said that home-school co-operation is important for the purpose.
The department had recommended that schools should explain to parents the role they play in reducing the weight of school bags.
It had also said that schools should review if the timetable is suitably arranged. As far as possible, it had suggested that schools should minimise the number of subjects for each day and design the timetable in such a way that lessons requiring students to bring a large number of textbooks, exercise books and heavy materials (such as atlas, drawing paper, cardboard, etc.) are evenly spread over the week.
