VISAKHAPATNAM/VIZIANAGARAM: Soon after the end of week-long celebrations of People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) formation, Maoists triggered a landmine blast at Lakkavarapupeta in GK Veedhi mandal of Visakhapatnam district on Friday morning while a group of Central Reserve Police Force was returning from the dense forests after a combing operation. However, no casualties were reported in the landmine blast. The police suspected that the Maoists might have planted the landmine weighing 4 kg to 6 kg on December 4 or 5 during their two-day Bharat Bandh against the killing of Mallojula Koteswara Rao alias Kishenji in an ‘encounter’ in West Bengal. In a separate incident, Maoists and police exchanged fire for about 15 minutes at Kuneru railway station in Komarada mandal of Vizianagaram district in the wee hours on Friday. However, no casualties were reported in the exchange of fire. Some unidentified persons entered the premises of Kuneru railway station in the wee hours. The special police force posted at the railway station to thwart any possible attack by the Maoists during the PLGA formation celebrations, grew suspicious and opened three rounds of fire at them. In retaliation, the group fired at the special police force and left the place under the cover of darkness. The Maoists warned they would resist bauxite mining in the agency to safeguard the interests of tribals.
