BELGAUM: Mayor Manda Balekundri has landed in another controversy for providing false information to the government about felicitating Jnanapith awardee Chandrashekhar Kambar.The mayor, in her reply to a show-cause notice forwarded last week, stated that Belgaum City Corporation did not oppose the congratulatory motion to be passed or to accord civic reception to Kambar, which was decided unanimously during the last council meeting.However, Kannada, Marathi and Urdu corporators who attended the meeting told Express that Mayor Manda had given false information to the government about felicitating Kambar and urged the government to verify the records of the proceedings of the council meeting to know the truth.Kannada and Urdu corporators who had remained absent from the council meeting alleged that Mayor Manda who, along with her deputy Renu Killekar, voted against passing the congratulatory motion and to accord civic reception to Kambar.She has been alleged to have provided false information in her reply and has been urged to initiate legal action against her for misleadings.Corporator Jagadish Chimalagi describe the Mayor’s false information as an offence and said that she has not only hoodwinked the government, but also to the people of the city. He said government must dismiss her and Deputy Mayor Renu.Meanwhile, many Marathi corporators are also disappointed over the reply to the notice.They said Mayor Manda’s action is nothing but insult to the pro-Maharashtrians who supported her against Kambar. They also cleared that passing a congratulatory motion and according civic reception to Kambar was voted against by 26-10 votes which has been recorded in the proceedings of the council.They also urged the government to review the proceedings of the council meeting and initiate strict action against Belgaum Mayor Manda if she was found guilty.
