COIMBATORE: Environmental activists and government officials involved in the distribution of water stressed the need for some regulatory mechanism on the usage of water resources, so the misuse of precious and scarce resource can be curtailed.Vanitha Mohan, Managing Trustee of Siruthuli lauded the policy, saying water needs to be priced and we are headed in the right direction. “Whatever comes as free, people tend to waste it, likewise water is also misused in our country. The government should frame clear rules and regulations for usage of water. Only then, we can preserve water resources for the future generation,” she added. She said, “In Israel, water supply was managed by the government. As, water was supplied to its citizen as ration, there was no water shortage. The farm yield in Israel is higher, due to their water management policy. But, we do not have a proper water management policy.”“Chennai gets 1,200 - 1,300 MM of water, but still people face water scarcity in the city. This is because we are not harvesting and managing the water,” she said. At the same time, she also cautioned that there should be clear norms and guidelines, otherwise this could lead to commercialisation of water. “Whenever people get water, over the limit what they will be requiring, they use them for gardening and cleaning the floors. That is the reason why, we decided to distribute water to a particular area for a fixed duration of time, ,” said a official from Coimbatore Corporation.
