New Delhi: Five members of a family had a narrow escape when an over 400-tonne crane used for Delhi Metro construction came crashing on their car, police said on Sunday.
Shashi Dharan, his wife Saly Dharan, daughter Shruthi Dharan, niece Gish Thomas and driver Nishtos were returning in their Honda Civic car from Connaught Place to their home when the crane fell on the car in Jor Bagh area of Lodhi Colony around 2200 hrs IST on Saturday.
"We were returning to our house when suddenly this 440-tonne crane fell on the rear side of our car. We were fortunate that it didn't completely smash the car as there was a footpath at the side due to which it just stopped inches before smashing the car completely," Shashi Dharan, managing director of Bharti Exhibitions company, told reporters.
Asked if he was contacted by any Delhi Metro officials, he said, "They called me up and said they want to send me flowers."
Police have registered a case under section 336 (negligence) of the Indian Penal Code against "unknown persons".
"We are investigating the matter and will take appropriate measures against the guilty," said a police officer.
