CHENNAI: Kith and kin of victims of medical negligence appealed to the state and society on Sunday to take into account the increasing number of complications due to irresponsible doctors. Crying foul over the recent protest by doctors, they said it only worsened the situation. In-laws of Nithya, who died while undergoing treatment with the slain Dr Sethulakshmi, expressed their suffering in the hospital without getting proper medical assistance. “Nitya was prescribed to undergo a Cesarean section and was completely normal before going into the operation theatre. The doctors later declared that she was brought dead,” said Dr Meenakshi Sundaram of Public Welfare Guards, the organisation that brought together the kin of the victims of medical negligence.“While we condemn the murder of Dr Sethulakshmi, it is also important to recall that the doctor had failed to follow the ethical medical procedures...” Dr Meenakshi Sundaram said.Krishnan of Nagercoil, whose wife went into a coma last week after she was administered nitrous oxide instead of oxygen, also condemned the doctors’ strike. “While the doctors have numerous associations to voice their protest and issues, we have no one to fight for us,” lamented Krishnan.Public Welfare Guards demanded that strict rules be imposed to prevent doctors in government hospitals from running private clinics. “Close to 90 per cent doctors have private clinics and they are barely available at government hospitals in times they are needed,” said Dr Sundaram.  The outfit also demanded that the TN Hospital Protection Act.
