The newly-appointed Commissioner of Police S George on Wednesday said maintenance of law and order and prevention of crime in the city are his top priorities.
Assuming charge at the police commissionerate here, he said there would be no compromise on law and order and stern steps would be taken to reduce the crime rate in the city.
Describing his new assignment as “challenging”, he expressed gratitude to the State government and said he would carry out his duties successfully with the cooperation of all sections of people. “There will be no compromise on law and order,” he asserted.
On the issue of frequent traffic chaos, George said steps would be initiated to reduce congestion.
The new posting of George, a 1984-batch officer of the Indian Police Service, came at a time when the city faced several protests by Muslim outfits, who were opposing a controversial American movie.
George attributed the traffic-related problems to the various projects like Metro Rail that were being executed in different parts of the city. The new CoP said he would also hold discussions with Corporation and officials of other departments on the issue.
The senior police official assured that people could approach police with their grievances without any hesitation.
Earlier, he was met by the outgoing police commissioner J K Tripathy and subsequently escorted to his chamber.
George was serving as the Additional Director-General of Police (Law and Order) before the current posting.
