CHENNAI: Carrying materials that conduct electricity, indulging in kite flying in and around electrical high tension (EHT) lines, using the legs of electrical towers to tie clotheslines or growing plants underneath them could result in fatal accidents, the Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation Ltd (TANTRANSCO) has cautioned. In an official release here, TANTRANSCO said kite flying around EHT lines, residing under electricity transmission structures and using the tower legs for drying clothes had caused feeder tripping many times.“This has led to interruption of power supply to many parts of Chennai and caused accidents sometimes resulting in loss of life,” TANTRANSCO warned. Such accidents also lead to outages and irreversible damage to electrical equipment at generating stations and substations. The transmission corporation noted that breaking or damaging any materials connected with the supply of electricity shall be punishable under Rule 139 and 140 of the Electricity Act 2003.“Kite flying leads to fatal electrical accidents when children climb the electricity poles to retrieve entangled kites.”Carrying power conducting materials like aluminium rods or cable TV wires near the EHT lines can cause fatal electrical accidents.Categorically stating that TANTRANSCO would not be responsible for any loss or damage caused due to such activities, the Transmission Corporation appealed to the public not to carry such materials or fly kites near electrical structures.“The tower legs should not be utilised to make temporary sheds or dry clothes. Growing plants beneath EHT lines is very dangerous.”
