No loadshedding till Onam: Aryadan

Minister for Power Aryadan Mohammed announced that there will not be any power load-shedding in Kerala till Onam. He was speaking after an official meeting held here on Saturday.

According to Aryadan, the state will pay a higher price for power, if necessary, to the Kayamkulam National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC).

“On Friday, we paid Rs 14.51 per unit to purchase power from NTPC. We expect the price to cross Rs 16 per unit, the highest amount we have paid till now,” he said.

Regarding the Central Government’s support to provide electricity to the state, Aryadan said that the Centre has been aiding them substantially, but it is still insufficient to meet the demand. “Presently, they are providing us with 1,038.7 MW of power,” said Aryadan.

The minister pointed out that the rain predictions this year were disappointing.

“We never expected such low rainfall. Currently, the quantity of water left in our dams can provide electricity for just 32 days.”

However, he added that if they are unable to purchase power from the Kayamkulam plant, load-shedding could be a problem after Onam.

Earlier, the state government had announced that it would resort to load-shedding to compensate for the power tariff hike.
