Officials on Monday evening said the release of water to Tamil Nadu from the Krishnaraja Sagar (KRS) Dam had been stopped. However, it was observed that some water was still flowing down the river.
Hundreds of farmers and pro-Kannada activists, who came to KRS to verify the state government’s claim of having stopped the water release, saw water flowing out of the reservoir. Soon, people in hundreds joined them and shouted slogans.
Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) leaders took officials to task, asking them why water was being released. To this, deputy commissioner B N Krishnaiah and executive engineer Vijayakumar claimed that water release had been stopped. Not convinced, the farmers demanded that they be allowed along with the media to check for themselves.
Finally, authorities took some farmers in a jeep and “convinced” them that water has not been released. But Pandavapura MLA C S Puttaraju and farmers insisted that the media film it for confirmation. But officials did not allow the media in. Farmers said they would stay there all night to stop the release. But some of them left following showers.
