TIRUPATI: Chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has called upon Congress activists to repulse the opposition's attack and media's disinformation campaign against the government, and to strive for the party's victory in the byelections.Speaking at a meeting of party activists here on Friday, he said such false propaganda was not new to the Congress and the party weathered the storm in the 2004 and 2009 general elections to ascend to power at the Centre and in in the state.Listing government's achievements, he said Rs 5,300 crore had been released for college fee reimbursement. The amount included arrears of Rs 1,800 crore. This year's sanction was Rs 3,500 crore as against Rs 800 crore in 2008 when the scheme was introduced by YS Rajasekhara Reddy. Yet, adversaries were carrying on with their Goebbels propaganda to deride his government, the chief minister said.In Tirupati, which has several universities with a huge student strength, Rs 55 crore was released this year as against Rs 28 crore in 2008. Unfortunately, the opposition and media were engaged in malicious propaganda which was divested of facts, he said.Delivering a strong and clear message to his party activists that winning the Tirupati Assembly by-election was crucial for the Congress for more than one reason, he advised them to conduct door-to-door campaigning explaining to people what the present government had done for them. He also wanted them to impress upon the voter the importance of exercising their franchise. ``This is because most of the voters in Tirupati are well-educated and may be too uninterested in electoral politics to take the trouble of going to the polling stations and standing in queue to cast their votes. He also urged the activists to din into the voters' mind.
