THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: ‘Hues of Silence’, the Degree Show of the first batch of Fine Arts students of the National Institute of Speech and Hearing (NISH) was set into motion on Monday by renowned filmmaker Adoor Gopalakrishnan.  Adoor emphasised the need for originality as an artist grows. ”It all starts with copying others probably, but one should not stay there. We have to grow in stature as we are able to come up with original art work,” he said. After viewing the art works, he commented that the quality of the work done by the students at NISH was better than what he had seen in other places.  “The BFA students at NISH have a real opportunity to be self-reliant by leading a productive and satisfying life using the skills they have learned. The great thing that these children have is that they can do what they love doing. I am sure those who visit ‘Hues of Silence Degree Show 2012’ will find it a rewarding experience. Especially when you consider that these works of art have been created by a group of very special young  people,” said G Vijayaraghavan, honorary director, NISH, on the occasion. NISH has been established under a society set up by the State Government for the welfare and rehabilitation of deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals. As part of rehabilitation activities, NISH conducts a Bachelor of Fine Arts (HI) degree course, exclusively for deaf and hard-of-hearing students. The course, affiliated to the University of Kerala, is a first-of-its-kind in the country. As part of course curriculum, the students have to conduct a Degree Show at the end of their 8th semester. During the Degree Show, they exhibit their creative skills in Painting, Applied Art and Sculpture. “This is a loud announcement to the world that individuals with disabilities can learn and be productive professionals standing shoulder-to-shoulder with others in society,’’ said Dr Samuel N Mathew, Executive Director, NISH. Among the 23 students, eight have chosen Painting, 11 Applied Art and four Sculpture as specialisation. The Painting students have displayed six paintings each created by them. The Sculpture students have displayed two fibre-glass creations, three metal-embossed art works, one wood carved work and one stone-carved work each. The current Degree Show will end on May 19.
