London: Imran Farooq, a leader of the pro-Musharraf Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) party, was stabbed to death on Thursday evening.
The police said they were called to reports of a serious assault in Green Lane, Edgware in North London and found a 50-year-old Asian male suffering from multiple stab wounds and head injuries. A Metropolitan Police spokesman said there had been no arrests.
Farooq claimed asylum in Britain 11 years ago after more than seven years on the run from the Pakistani police who accused him of involvement in cases of murder and other serious crimes. He denied the charges.
According to reports on the MQM website from 1999, Farooq sought asylum after a contract was taken out on his life. He was the secretary general of the party at the time.
The MQM party is influential in Sindh province and the city of Karachi.
