Parliament Updates: Opposition Mulling Impeachement Motion Against VP Dhankar After Heated Exchange With SP MP Jaya Bachchan
On Thursday, the Opposition staged a walkout from Rajya Sabha over the issue of Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024

The Opposition is mulling an impeachment motion against Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar following a heated exchange between him and Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Jaya Amitabh Bachchan after the veteran actor questioned his tone in the House during the ongoing monsoon session. The heated exchange led to protests by the Opposition members, who finally staged a walkout.

Earlier in the day, Lok Sabha congratulated Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra and the Indian Men’s Hockey team for their respective medals in the Paris Olympics 2024.

Neeraj Chopra clinched a historic hard-fought Silver in the Men’s Javelin Throw event at the Paris Olympics on Thursday. The Indian Hockey Team also achieved Olympic success yet again, clinching the Bronze medal with a fiery 2-1 win over Spain at the Paris Olympics on Thursday.

Meanwhile, Congress moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha on Friday over the disqualification issue of wrestler Vinesh Phogat, two days after she was disqualified from the Paris Olympics 2024 finals after failing to make the 50 kg weight category.

On Thursday, the Opposition staged a walkout from Rajya Sabha over the issue of Vinesh Phogat’s disqualification from the Paris Olympics 2024.

Speaking on the issue, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar said,”…They (Opposition) think they are the only ones whose hearts are bleeding…The entire nation is in pain because of the girl. everyone is sharing the situation but to monetise it, politicise it, is the greatest disrespect to the girl. That girl has a long way to go…”

Union Minister of Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Thursday moved the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 in Lok Sabha. The Bill was met with resistance by the Opposition who called it “anti-Muslim”.

AIMIM MP Asaduddin Owaisi accused the Centre of dividing the country and targeting Muslims. Congress MP KC Venugopal called the Bill an “attack on the federal system”.

  • On Neeraj Chopra’s silver medal in the Paris Olympics, Azad Samaj Party (Kanshi Ram) MP Chandra Shekhar Azad said, “I was seeing his match last night. I congratulate Neeraj bhai and the countrymen. He remains our golden boy and he will inspire the youth of the nation.”
  • RJD MPs staged a protest in the Parliament on Friday, demanding special status for Bihar.
  • Punjab Congress MPs held a protest outside parliament demanding the rollback of Section 43B(h) of the Income Tax Act, introduced through the Finance Act 2023.
