Singer opens up about the reasons why being famous isn't all that great, and what scares him the most in life.

Singer Mohit Chauhan has had a busy work schedule for months now. From composing music to attending film festivals and performing live at concerts, it hasn't been easy for Mohit to extricate himself from all the work he has been involved in. But juggling professional and personal life has thankfully become overwhelming for him. During his recent visit to the city, he opened up about the reasons why being famous isn't all that great, and what scares him the most in life. Excerpts from an exclusive interview:

You are in an industry where people are ready to invest in your potential and skills because they are aware of the profits it will reap. Have you ever met people who tried to make huge bucks out of you?

Yes that happens a lot, people do try to make huge bucks out of me. But I'm in a business to make music and such things will happen, always. People will benefit from me. But a lot depends on how people make you feel when you are working with them. It has to be done in a positive way. There shouldn't be any hidden agenda which is revealed later.

Agreed, there are several perks to being a celebrity and an important part of Indian showbiz. Have there been moments when you felt that being famous isn't really worth it?

Even when I earned popularity, I never made an effort to make music to sustain it. Being known or staying in the limelight has never been the main thing for me. It becomes an impediment when you have to be incognito.

What you become on the way to your destination is more important than the journey itself. Do you agree?

Nothing is called as a destination in life. It is all about the journey. It is about traveling far and wide, facing obstacles and combating challenges. At some point in life, a small station you reach could be a destination, but it just a milestone. And this doesn't only apply to professional domain. It is the same for personal life too. It is about how one grows, that too in a meaningful way, during the course of the journey.

What scares you the most in life - solitude, betrayal or loss of stardom?

It has to be betrayal. I like being loyal to my friends, to do everything for the warmth. Solitude is not a problem for me. Since I have been on trekking holidays, I don't think of it as a trouble. Loss of stardom has never been a deal. As an artist, I can't avoid it. It will always exist.

You have always had a strong commitment to perform competently and achieve success. Do you think your conscious decision to free yourself from herd mentality worked in your favour?

Unlike my friends, I always believed in following my heart. If you ask my opinion, I'd say when you listen to your heart, you aren't preoccupied with materialistic aspect, power and pride. Instead, you find peace and succeed in discovering your purpose. So yes, to do something I had huge inclination towards has always excited me. When I look back, I take pride in the fact that I didn't settle for a government job. I remember, when I had applied for Masters, almost all my friends were busy applying for government jobs. Since my elder brother was a bureaucrat, the pressure was immense. But I never succumbed to the pressure. And that's a key aspect of living a happy life.

What's your reaction?
