CHENNAI: The Pallavan Grama Bank, in association with National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) and Indian Bank, on Sunday, launched a pilot study to implement Mobile-enabled Kisan Credit Cards in Villupuram.Briefing reporters after a sensitisation meet on the project for bankers and farmers, Chairman and Managing Director of Indian Bank T M Bhasin said that the project would first be implemented with the Regional Rural Bank in Villupuram and gradually extended to other banks within the district and then to other areas in the State. He said that a coaching and training programme would also be taken up along with the pilot project to sensitise farmers on the benefits of using such advanced technology in their transactions.Chairman of NABARD Prakash Bakshi said that while the response for the Kisan Credit Cards had been below expectations in the country, there had been a number of factors identified for such a scenario, including the need for the farmer to travel several times to the branches in order to complete his transactions.Apart from reducing the time and cost involved in the various transactions, the project also aimed at cutting down cash exchanges between parties.While NABARD has provided a grant assistance of Rs 44.66 lakh for the project in Villupuram, he said that the aim was to ensure secure and reliable method of banking to the farmers through mobile phone technology.
