Reiterating the need for housing for urban poor he said, “Around 40% of the population either lives in urban centres or depends on urban centres to make a living, we need to change the life of poor man.” On the need of urbanisation, he asked the stakeholders to take it as an opportunity to improve the lives of people.
Allotting Rs 50,000 crore for the plan, PM Modi stressed on the need of Foreign Direct Investment for urban rejuvenation projects and expressed concern over lack of any concrete future plan for cities.
The Prime Minister further announced that launch of the Smart City Mission, saying 60 such cities would be developed in the first phase.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in its Lok Sabha manifesto had listed Smart Cities as one of its main objectives. It is termed as one of Modi’s pet projects which he regularly mentioned in public rallies in his run up to the Lok Sabha polls.
Referring to the need of smart cities, the Prime Minister said that it would provide "more than what a citizen expects. Before he wants it, we provide it".
“This is for the first time that to make cities smart, the Centre and State will not take decisions. People and municipalities will decide,” said PM Modi, adding the “expansion of cities will depend largely on steps taken by local bodies”.
