PML-N govt does not intend to block Google: Pak minister
Google, the parent company of YouTube, had rejected requests from the previous Pakistan Peoples Party-led government to remove objectionable material.

Islamabad: Amid reports that Google could be blocked in Pakistan, the country's new IT Minister on Thursday said the PML-N government does not intend to do so and only wishes to have an effective mechanism in place for shutting out blasphemous contents. "PML-N government does not intend to block Google in Pakistan rather we wish to have an effective and efficient mechanism in place for blocking blasphemous contents before YouTube can be unblocked in Pakistan," Minister of State for IT and Telecommunication Anusha Rahman said.

Google, the parent company of YouTube, had rejected requests from the previous Pakistan Peoples Party-led government to remove objectionable material. The PML-N government has listed as one of its priorities the restoration of YouTube with filters to screen blasphemous and pornographic content.

Pakistan banned YouTube for objectionable content on September 17, 2012. The ban was lifted for a few hours in December before being reinstated following protests from right wing groups.
