Chennai: Expressing his opinion on the legendary question of whether scribes and politicians can remain friends, senior journalist Vinod Mehta said on Friday that was "not possible."
"I have given this a lot of thought. And I think we can't be friends. Because, fundamentally of our jobs. A politician's job is evasive... cheating and sometimes outright lies," Mehta, Editor-in-chief of Outlook, said launching his book 'Lucknow Boy' in Chennai.
"Our job as journalists, I mean, our objective at least is to be objective is to try and tell the truth. And therefore, this trait can never meet," he said.
Not happy with "big chunks of media" being acquired by corporates, he said, "In Britain, they have something called the Monopolies Commission, in which, any merger, is seen whether this merger is in public interest... Let thousand flowers bloom... let the reader make up his mind... but media which is confined to a few hands is very dangerous and it is happening in India," he said.
