BHUBANESWAR: Despite the threat of Red terror, filing of nomination papers from the Maoist-affected districts has been encouraging though in some blocks of Rayagada district, no candidates filed  papers. Reports reaching here said that 1,466 candidates had filed their nomination papers for ward members in Malkangiri, out of which 1,272 remained valid after scrutiny. Similarly, there were 396 nominations for the posts of sarpanch in the district out of which 364 remained valid. While 339 filed nomination papers for panchayat samiti members, 313 remained valid. Similarly, 58 of the 69 nominations for zilla parishad members remained valid. According to reports, 7,615 candidates are in the fray in Mayurbhanj district for ward members while 2,212 will be testing their luck for the posts of sarpanch. In Deogarh, another Maoist-affected district, 26 candidates are in the fray for the Zilla Parishad polls while 259 are in the race for the posts of sarpanch. In Jajpur district, 149 candidates are in the fray for the zilla parishad polls while 1,247 candidates will vie for the posts of sarpanch. Reports reaching here said that 6,667 candidates are left in the fray for the election of ward members in the district.
