PARADIP: The engine of a goods train of Paradip Port Trust (PPT) caught fire at Rangiagarh old station in Paradip on Thursday, but no employee of either the PPT or railway department was injured. The engine caught fire around 4 pm due to some electrical problem. Sources said PPT has pressed seven engines to transport cargo loaded wagons from Rangiagarh railway station to Paradip portharbour.Engine no 4 which was empty and waiting at Rangiagarh old station for transportation of cargo caught fire.The driver spotted smoke billowing from a motor of the engine and informed PPT officials. Fire fighters rushed to the spot and doused the flames with the help of rail workers. The engine was shifted to the loco shed where experts will study the exact cause of the fire.Police suspect short circuit behind the incident. No casualty or loss of property was reported. Mechanics switched off the power and detached the engine from the rake. The track was cleared for railway traffic within 30 minutes.Chief Mechanical Engineer, PPT, Sunil Kumar Patnaik said the damage to electrical equipment was estimated at around `5 lakh. A major tragedy was averted due to the prompt action of the staff, Patnaik added.
