Pune: Union Environment and Forest Minister Prakash Javadekar on Saturday inaugurated an Urban Forest Garden project at Warje near Pune as part of the urban afforestation programme of the Central Government to increase tree cover around cities.

About 4,000 tress will be grown under the project which also envisages planting of medicinal herbs, a lake for birds and jogging tracks for citizens.

Javadekar outlined the Centre's programme, saying it aimed at creating forest parks at available land in urban areas with people's participation.

He also made a monetary contribution to the forest officials asking them to plant a sapling in memory of his father.

The scheme was conceived to achieve a balance between development and environment protection, the minister added.
