New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday ordered that a police officer of the rank of a deputy inspector general (DIG) monitor the investigation into the death of Prof H S Sabharwal in Ujjain on August 26.
A Bench headed by Justice Arijit Pasayat asked MP’s Director General of Police to place before it a status report on the probe by November 3.
Sabharwal was allegedly beaten by ABVP activists in Madhav Government College after he and his colleagues cancelled students’ union elections.
The Court directed the DIG to place an affidavit before it about the allegation that the investigation was not carried impartially.
The Madhya Pradesh police has to ensure that witnesses are provided protection for recording their statements. The Court also issued notices to the CBI, Madhya Pradesh government and other respondents on a petition filed by Sabharwal's son Himanshu seeking a CBI probe.
