CHENNAI: The Sathyabama University, in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, on Friday launched a 50 metre radiation and weather measurement tower for academic purposes.Scientists from IGCAR, who inaugurated the tower, said that the entire instrument, except for the sensors, had been indigenously made and that it had cost a total sum of `25 lakh to install it. The tower will be used to help students understand the nuances of measuring radiation, which is naturally emanated from the earth’s crust. This apart, the instrument would also help monitor climatic changes by studying various weather parameters. Venkatesan, a scientist from IGCAR, said that the sensors were also connected with their systems in Kalpakkam which would receive the data on a real-time basis. He said that the tower was the fifth such installation around Kalpakkam. IGCAR is engaged in scientific research and advanced engineering directed  towards the development of  Fast Breeder Reactor technology.
