New Delhi: As the Centre plans to push through a Constitutional amendment bill that will introduce a 10 percent quota for economically weaker sections from the upper castes, the ongoing winter session has been pushed ahead by a day till Wednesday.

In a move that may prove to be a gamechanger ahead of general elections, the Union Cabinet this afternoon approved 10% reservation for economically backward upper castes in jobs and education, sources told News18.

The bill is expected to be introduced in the Lok Sabha tomorrow by Union minister Thawar Chand Gehlot.

Both the BJP and the Congress have issued a whip to party MPs to be present in Lok Sabha on Tuesday. The bill is expected to witness a smooth sailing in the Lok Sabha as the Congress has extended its support to the bill.

The move will require amending Article 16 of the Constitution to provide for reservation for economically weaker sections. The winter session of Parliament, which began on December 11, was to end on Tuesday.

The BJP has struggled to get its bills passed in the Rajya Sabha as it lacks the numbers in the House.
