Written and directed by Paul WS Anderson, 'Resident Evil: Retribution' is the new edition in the 'Resident Evil' franchise. This time Milla Jovovich has used advanced technology and has done more dangerous stunts. Special effects that work more as the saviour for the weak story-line is technically better this time.
Similar to earlier films, the story revolves around Alice (Milla Jovovich) whose battle with the Umbrella Corporation is still continued in order to save the world. As expected, she is the in charge of saving the entire mankind against the zombie retribution.
The film opens with Milla narrating the past, and within minutes, we find her being attacked by the people infected by the T-virus. She meets Ada Wong (Li Bingbing), who used to work for Umbrella Corporation earlier, in one of the corporation's bases and enjoys her support in the fight against the half deads. The latest version of 'Resident Evil' also sees the return of Michelle Rodriguez though she has not much to offer as Rain Ocampo.
The film's basic philosophy is flawed. The storyteller shies away from taking a stand against mindless modernization just at the time when he was most required to do so. The 95 minute movie appears promising within first few minutes but Anderson lets the tempo go down once initial sequences are over.
The video game based film quickly gets repetitive and reaching to the next level becomes the only motive left for the actors as well the viewers. At times, the audience gets confused whether he is seeing a new film or the recap of earlier ones.
The combination of poor storyline and 'not so cool' action sequences assist in making it a plethora of cliches. Action sequences and the twists are not apt enough to stop you from yawning.
Probably, the stunt director and Milla Jovovich didn't enjoy a good relationship during the shoot as the actress looked in discomfort during some stunts, which were supposed to keep the audience on the edge otherwise.
Background score is loud but it doesn't affect the spectator much simply because it's hard to figure out what is more irritating, the background score or the endless gunfights.
Milla tries hard to live up to the expectations but she doesn't do much apart from looking super-sexy. The film fails at many levels; however an ardent fan can always tolerate it for Milla Jovovich.
