Tamil Nadu recorded the most number of deaths per lakh population in road accidents in 2012.
Union Minister Gopinath Munde's death in a road accident in New Delhi has brought the focus back on road safety in India. 138,258 lives were lost in 2012, a year which witnessed almost half a million road accidents, according to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. This data, seen in conjunction with the population of the states tells us that while Tamil Nadu recorded the most number of deaths per lakh population in road accidents, Goa had a disproportionately higher number of incidents of road accidents (per lakh population) in the same year.
