TIRUNELVELI: The Tamil Nadu government has allotted Rs 1.20 crore for Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital exclusively to improve the infrastructure and medical facilities for dengue patients, said Dean M Manoharan.Speaking to newsmen at the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital on Monday, Dean Manoharan said that 1977 persons had undergone treatment so far at the hospital for dengue fever. In the microbiology lab, 724 samples were tested positive through NS1 and IGM tests. The number of patients undergoing treatment for dengue, however, has seen a gradual decrease from around 200 to 220 earlier in the month down to 108 on Monday. This number included 45 children.There were no dengue deaths reported for the last three days at the hospital.The dean said as there was no direct medicine or vaccination for dengue fever, only symptomatic treatment was being given to all the patients admitted in hospitals. Twenty one persons, including 15 children and 6 adults above 50 years, died due to dengue fever at the TMCH.Stating that the Tamil Nadu Government had taken several steps for improving the medical and infrastructure facilities to handle dengue cases, he said the Tamil Nadu government had given `45 lakh to install modern ventilators and infusion pipes in the wards. Besides, `20 lakh was given for developing the microbiology wards and an additional `20 lakh was given for the improving the blood bank at the hospital.Manoharan said the government had given another `35 lakh for developing the wards and arrange for extra beds.Tirunelveli Medical College vice-principal Dr N Palaniappan, hospital superintendent Dr J Jimla Balachandran and Deputy Director of Medical Education Dr A Sukumaran were present.
